End-of-the-year opportunity to support YesWeServe

What a year it has been for YesWeServe! Our young, growing organization is now serving on three continents;
- North America; at three orphanages in Mexicali, Mexico

- Africa; Through a K-8 school and village sustainability ministry in Ghana

- Asia; In a K-9 school, children’s home, women’s literacy, and village ministries in Uttar Pradesh, India

- In addition to growing globally we have also expanded locally, in Long Beach, CA, with our first full school year of our S.T.A.R.T.S. tutoring and arts program (please see our web site at www.yesweserve.org and follow us on facebook to get additional details on these wonderful programs).

We know, of course, that there are many fine organizations asking for your financial support at this time of year. At YesWeServe we want to say a big thank you for such an awesome year, and for providing us with the resources to touch so many people’s lives. We hope that you will continue to partner with us in the New Year to enable YesWeServe to have an even bigger impact both locally and globally.

2012 is almost over, so we ask that you will consider sending a financial donation before year’s end so that we may be able to continue to build YesWeServe. We are a non-profit 501©3, so you will receive a tax-deductible receipt for your donation.

Please go to our website and use our PayPal account or mail your donation to 2436 E. 4th Street #44, Long Beach, CA 90814

Without your contributions we would not be in a position to “change the world, one child at a time”!

Thank you, and may God bless you during this Advent and Christmas season!

While thinking about turkey, stuffing and being thankful...

It might be tempting, even fitting, to say something bland or non-confrontationally pleasant about a turkey and some stuffing and something vague about being thankful, since we are entering the Thanksgiving season this week.  But, a Sunday in November has been dedicated to a prayer effort for the Persecuted Church since 1996. Being a Christian believer is not about playing games, it’s not about trying to gain God’s favor by following rules and regulations, it’s not a Sunday-morning-only religious exercise. And, being challenged by Hebrews 13:3  Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body, I will take primary focus off our needs and onto others.

Here is what’s going on:

IRAN:  Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani,  32 years old, married with two small boys, was in jail for 1,000+ days, accused of apostasy against Islam.  After Christians around the world, running into the millions after joining in a Twitter campaign, were praying for him he was suddenly released two months ago.

Elsewhere in that same country, there have been and continues to be, waves of arrests of Christians, and regular raids on Christian meetings, destruction and confiscation of Bibles and church properties.  An Iranian pastor, based in London, England, relates how “one Iranian Christian describes the house church movement ‘like a James Bond movie’ – how they are careful about their communication, how they switch meeting places, how they turn off their phones, how they take out their SIM cards.”

EGYPT: The media has told us about the “Arab Spring”, but listen to what is the motto of the Muslim Brotherhood who took power there last year: “Allah is our objective, the Prophet is our leader; the Quran is our law; Jihad is our way; dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope”.  Whereas there was relative safety for Christian believers, most of them Coptic Christians, prior to last year’s revolution in Egypt, imagine what that type of a motto does to the safety of Christians right now!

SYRIA: another Middle Eastern country, is currently suffering through a civil war which has so far cost 30,000 lives.  Conditions for Christians and non-Christians alike have gotten worse.  A pastor there sent an email to the organization Open Doors USA.  He said: “I can cry like Nehemiah because the walls of our cities are burnt and the people in great trouble and disgrace.  I can weep like Jeremiah because of the intensity and the spread of evil.  I can mourn like David because of the indiscriminate brutal killing of innocent people, children, women, elderly, youth.  But despite the dangers, the churches remain determined to extend the Gospel and to offer aid as they are able. The pastor concludes: “While we can see and sense the evil powers spreading a dark cloud over the country, closing the door for the light of hope, we still trust our all-sovereign God ‘who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ’” (2 Cor. 2:14).  Notice how his images and practical theology emanate from the Bible and its people!

NIGERIA: particularly in the northern states, the vicious group Boko Haram (Hausa = “Western education is sin”) routinely attack Christian churches during services and massacre dozens of worshipers at a time.  Still, unafraid, the believers keep going to church to worship the Lord;  SUDAN: Christians are still fleeing aggression from their own government which has killed thousands;  PAKISTAN: people are still awaiting the verdict for a 14 year old Christian girl – Rimsha Masih – who was framed by a Muslim cleric with burning a Quran;  INDIA: there continues to be relentless persecution, beatings and severe harassments by Hindu mobs against Christians and pastors.  MOROCCO: deportation of Christian workers who were running children’s homes, or community development projects like job creation and education, for “proselytizing”.  Asks one of them: “We’ve always lived our lives openly; at what point does living your life become proselytizing?”

So, what do Christians do to “fight back”?  Members of the organization “Stephen’s Children” in Cairo’s slums in the garbage heaps go door-to-door to identify needs, sharing Bible stories, developing reading skills, and offer critical nutrition to the families living there.  Mama Maggie, who is in charge of Stephen’s Children says: “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the worldChristians in Egypt have known hardships before… so, we are very happy that we are the fruit of the prayers of the martyrs and their seeds. So it’s our turn to do something until we leave.”

House-church networks in various countries report growth, also in number of converts; they refuse to let fear paralyze them.

Astonishingly, the first thing these persecuted Christians ask for isn’t activism or advocacy on their behalf; it’s prayer!  Prayer for protection against violence… prayer to remain faithful under pressure… prayer for the ability to continue their Christian service.  Prayer, not necessarily for persecution to go away, but for faith that is unwavering (!).

Those of us who confess Jesus Christ are part of His Body, a community of faith in the Living Savior and Lord.  This community is world-wide, it is rooted outside time and space, yet it is present here and now.

Add to your daily prayer list those brothers and sisters in the faith around the world who are being persecuted as they live out the same relationship with Jesus that you and I do.

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Imagine you're on your feet, dancing and singing praises to the Lord during the Sunday morning church worship service.  Before anyone realizes what is happening, your pew neighbor crumbles to the floor. As you reach over to help him, you hear yelling and sounds of gun shots from the back of the church building.  Horrified, you hit the cement floor and take cover under the wooden bench.  Screaming drowns out singing, crying and desperate calls for help are mixed in the cacophony that follows.  The gun fire silences the cries from your friends in church.  Loud battle cries accompany the intruders and can still be heard as they exit the door, pumping their guns into the air, leaving dozens of church goers dead or wounded in their wake.
Such a situation took place last month in Nigeria.  It was the most recent of many such attacks.  Not only there; regularly in other places like Afghanistan and Viet Nam Christians suffer anything from beheadings, languishings in jail, homes ransacked and burned.  Christians are brutally persecuted and killed, and the local government is either unwilling or unable to protect its Christian citizens.

Increasingly, this is the case in more and more places around the world.  Christians are risking their lives by proclaiming their faith.  And they do it, anyway, personalizing 1 John 4:4 - "Greater is He who is in me, than he who is in the world".  Fully aware of the risk and cost, they value their life in Christ higher than the hardship they almost certainly will be confronted with.
Since 1996 one Sunday in November has marked The International Day of Prayer (IDOP).  This year, it’s Sunday, 11 November.  So far, over 100,000 churches in the US, plus in 130 countries, including almost every denomination, has participated in remembering those who are persecuted for their faith in Jesus Christ.

An entry on www.persecutedchurch.org explains: “The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP) is a global day of intercession for persecuted Christians worldwide. Its primary focus is the work of intercessory prayer and citizen action on behalf of persecuted communities of the Christian faith. We also encourage prayer for the souls of the oppressors, the nations that promote persecution, and those who ignore it.  We believe that prayer changes things. Exactly what happens is a mystery of faith. God invites us to present to Him our requests and to pray without ceasing. Persecuted Christians often plead for prayer to help them endure. The most we can do is the least we can do — pray.”

Join us in doing so this Sunday, and then add to your prayer list our persecuted brothers and sisters that they may have courage and stand strong in the faith.

S.T.A.R.T.S. calling!

The month-long break at Luther Burbank Elementary School in Long Beach is almost over.  It’s time to being S.T.A.R.T.S. again, but we need partnership from you. We need resources to run S.T.A.R.T.S. – Soaring To Achieve, Reaching To Succeed, our arts and tutoring program for inner city children -  in this new semester.
For the past year, we have provided the children with nurturing, compassionate care, community involvement, and tutoring.  Many of you, who are reading this post, have given your time and talents to make this happen.  You have experienced frustration and joy, exhilaration and challenges, and the blessings of bonding with children who oftentimes come from situations where love and direction are lacking. You have helped make a positive difference in a young life who probably would not have had it if not for your being willing to show up and step up!
Now we need to hear from you; whether you can give an hour, a day (3 ½ hours), or any time frame – we need to hear from you. If your forte is tutoring 1-5 grade children, or if you are knowledgeable in some kind of art – we have offered drawing, painting, ballet, pottery, sports – we need to hear from you.
We also need the financial resources to make sure S.T.A.R.T.S. is able to continue. S.T.A.R.T.S. is free to needy families and we know that S.T.A.R.T.S. is making a difference in the lives of the children and also in the lives of the families.
Ask God what He would have you contribute, and then please call or email us in response to this letter.
Thank you for considering “changing the world, one child at a time” at YesWeServe’s S.T.A.R.T.S. program!

"Cup for a Cause" Event Launched!

As the sun descended in the sky last Saturday night, workers at the Royal Cup Café were busy taking orders from eager customers;  tea latte, mocha royale coffee, vegetarian salad never tasted this good (and came in a size plenty big enough to satisfy two grown men who’d brought their appetites)   -  and don’t get us started on the paninis…  : )

In the backroom of the café, surrounded by eclectic artwork and furniture, Marcus Gerakos strummed the first tunes on his guitar for YesWeserve’s inaugural monthly “Cup for a Cause” event.  His expertly performed Chick Corea’s “Spain” was followed by a string of numbers from his own CD “Marmelade Sky” as well as several of his own compositions. Marcus was instrumental (!) on our “For the Children” CD project, as he wrote two of the songs, and played guitar on several of the other numbers.

The intimacy of the venue, the closeness between artist and listeners were indicative of  how we do ministry:  near, hands-on, present, real time.

Here is how this new venture works: By ordering delicious food from Royal Cup Café we support the local business, which provides us the venue in the back room of the café, located on the SE corner of 10th and Redondo in Long Beach, CA.  To support the ministry of YesWeServe we presented several options on convenient sign-up lists.

We have several top notch musicians who support the cause of YesWeServe: “changing the world, one child at a time”.  Through this new third-Saturday-of-every-month event, we wish to give a platform to our musician/artist friends, while at the same time giving everyone a chance to listen to great music, enjoy delicious food and give to YesWeServe through a one-time or regular donation, or purchase YesWeServe items like tees, Ghana beads, Indian glass bracelets.

Thank you, Marcus, for a great musical evening!  Thank you to all of you who showed up to enjoy his music and support the ministry of YesWeServe.  All glory to God!

August YesWeServe Happenings

On a hunch we stopped by Mision Frontera on our “Missionary for a Day” trip to Mexicali last Saturday.  A change in leadership had left the Home empty over the summer, so it was a pleasant surprise to find that it is up and running again!  New people have come in to lead the Childrens Home, and we were very happy to meet Claudia, the new person in charge.

It is always so encouraging to spend this time with the children, and particularly when we can join them at the waterpark for a few hours’ respite from the heat.

That was our first YesWeServe event this month, and here are two more, both of which we are excited about:

Our second event this month will be taking place on Saturday 11 August; YARDSALE!  After our initial attempt rained out in March, we will now do an even better yardsale in the gym at Grace UMC (on the NE corner of Junipero and Third street in Long Beach, CA).  Interest has already prompted us to move the opening to 7 a.m.  We still need your help to “man” tables, help with ticket sales, assist at the food station, etc.  Please email me back or call us at (562-234-7378) to let me know that you will be helping out to do your part to make this yardsale a success : )

Remember that the proceeds from the Yardsale will benefit YesWeServe’s ministries; S.T.A.R.T.S., Mexicali, Ghana, India.

The third YesWeServe event will take place NEXT Saturday, 18 August.  The Royal Cup Café, on the SE corner of Redondo and 10.th Street in Long Beach, CA, is the venue for a mini YesWeServe concert.  This new feature will take place the third Saturday of every month, at 6:30 p.m. till 9:30 p.m.

We will have a rotation of musical artists, highlight YesWeServe’s ministry and invite attendants to support/get involved.

To kick off this series is MARCUS GERAKOS, who will thrill you with his guitar music!  Many of you have heard Marcus play already; he is part of the original “YesWeServe Band”, he features prominently on our CD “For the Children” where he composed and performed two of the cuts.

So, make your way to The Royal Cup Café on Saturday night, make a date night out of it, have a cup of tea or coffee and some sandwiches, listen to beautiful music, and support a great cause!

Thank you for your service!

We are so pleased that so many of  you come out regularly to help out in the STARTS program!  Some of you are there almost every day, others we can count on for particular days – the same time-slot every week; so helpful for planning! – while still others come occasionally and provide valuable assistance, as well.

Many of you bring specialized skills which really heighten the quality of what we offer the children trough this tutoring/homework help and arts program.

Thank you to every one of you who dedicate time every week, who re-organize your schedules, who come over after your work to make this happen!

While STARTS runs every school day from 2:30 – 6 p.m., let me invite you to another, one-off, opportunity to serve: this week-end we will carry out a yard sale to benefit the ministry of YesWeServe.

The time is Saturday 17 March (St. Patrick’s Day) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The location is – no rain! – in the parking lot across the street from Grace UMC on the SW corner of Third and Junipero in Long Beach, or – if the meteorologists get their prediction of rain right - in the multi-purpose room inside the church’s Admin building, at 2325 E 3rd St, in the STARTS location.

We need your help to set up, take down, and run the tables, etc.,  Friday night (from 6 p.m.), and on Saturday, from 8 a.m.

We also welcome items you would like to donate to the yard sale!

Please give us a call to let us know that / when you will be able to help out, and/or if you have items to donate!

God bless you today!

Announcing Yard Sale Saturday 17 March!

No, we're not selling the yard, nor the garage... but we will be having a "rummage sale" on Saturday 17 March,  from 9 a.m. -3 p.m. The location is the parking lot across from Grace United Methodist Church, at 2325 East Third Street in Long Beach, CA. That's the church where we carry out our S.T.A.R.T.S. program.

We welcome all sorts of items, so look in your attic or in your garage, or anywhere else you keep your stuff, for that matter, and bring us your sellable items! You can bring them any day during the S.T.A.R.T.S. program, which runs every school day from 3-6 p.m. If it is more convenient for you outside of those hours, just give us a call and we will arrange for someone to receive your donations.

This is also another opportunity for you to volunteer by helping out! We need folks to move the stuff from the storage area in the church, others to help attend to what we hope will be a LOT of customers, and for all of you to bring your friends and neighbors to purchase items : )

So, spread the word, plan to come over and help us reach our goal of $1,000.00!

Announcing YesWeServe's Ghana trip this summer!

Next Thursday, 2 February, you are invited to an orientation meeting for YesWeServe’s trip to Ghana this summer.

As is our custom, besides ministry, our trips also include other aspects to help team-members gain a deeper understanding of both the history and the culture of the people we will be serving.

Even if you are only curious about this opportunity at this time, come on over and we will be prepared to answer any questions you might have, and explain requirements, expectations, opportunities, etc.

The focus this summer will be on construction and medical services.  We have several exciting sustainability projects lined up, and we will be discussing them at the meeting.

YesWeServe encourages people to minister in their gift set.  You may have looked for an opportunity such as this – or tried to avoid it in the past? - and God has been waiting for you to be willing to step out in faith so that you can grow in Him!

The meeting will begin shortly after the conclusion of S.T.A.R.T.S., our tutoring and arts program, at about 6:15 p.m. in our office at Grace UMC, 2325 East Third Street in Long Beach, CA.  Look for us at the far east entrance of the building where it says “Suffer the children to come unto me” – Luke 18:15.

See you Thursday night!
