A while back we were able to help Martin at La Esperanza de los Niños (one of our orphanages in Mexicali, Mexico) acquire a taco cart, as well as the business, clientele, and location to go with it. If you love Mexican food, you know that there’s no better place to enjoy such fare than where the locals go to eat.
We helped Martin do what?! Part of YesWeServe’s philosophy is “sustainability”. Sort of like, instead of giving a man a fish - and feed him for a day -you teach him to fish – and he’ll be fed for a lifetime. Well, Martin’s a cook by trade and has wowed us with his culinary skills several times, most recently two weeks ago for our December “Missionary for a Day” trip. The business –dubbed “Tacos Vikingos” by Martin himself in honor(?) of Geir’s background – was operational for just a few week-ends. Then the former owner reclaimed the tiny sliver of land where the business was carried out, and it’s been in a holding position ever since.
To help Martin, and the orphanage, to be more self-sufficient, we want to kick-start Martin’s taco business. The plan is that he will take out his taco cart on week-ends and make a profitable income for La Esperanza de los Niños. The older kids will be given a chance to participate in this venture. They will learn to prepare food, work with customers, get used to the discipline of work (and its rewards), handle money – in short, grow as independent and team-working young boys and girls.
Here’s our main hurdle right now: both the axle and the hitch of his cart are broken. We need somebody with mechanical skills to come alongside us to help get the taco cart up to working order. If you, or somebody you know, have those skills, we’d love to hear from you!
Help us get “Tacos Vikingos” going so that it can help sustain the ministry at La Esperanza de los Niños!
